Texas Deaf Disc Golf

The Texas Deaf Disc Golf League is part of a broader initiative by the Deaf Disc Golf Association (DDGA) to support and promote disc golf among the Deaf community. This league fosters community, competition, and inclusivity among Deaf disc golfers and those fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).

The DDGA organizes various events, including the annual Central Open, which took place in March 2021 at Brazos Park East in Waco, Texas. This PDGA-sanctioned event provided a competitive platform exclusively for Deaf players and those proficient in ASL, significantly contributing to the engagement within the Deaf disc golf community.

In Texas, the Deaf disc golf community is active in several key locations. In Austin, multiple courses and leagues, including the National Amateur Disc Golf Tour (NADGT), host events and activities. Prominent parks like Met Center and Roy G. Guerrero Park are hubs for disc golf, fostering a vibrant community for Deaf disc golfers.

Houston also serves as a significant hub, with parks such as Gwen Hruska Park in Conroe and Bear Branch Sportsfield Park in The Woodlands hosting events and leagues. The North Side Chain Gang, a notable local club, organizes events promoting inclusivity and competition among Deaf disc golfers.

Other cities with active Deaf disc golf clubs include Midland, where the Midland Disc Golf Association operates at Windlands Park, and San Antonio, with the Bandera Disc Golf Course. Wichita Falls also hosts events at Lake Wichita Park and Lucy Park.

The DDGA is a national organization that aims to expand disc golf among Deaf individuals across the country. It hosts national and regional tournaments, catering to Deaf and CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) players. Their events are inclusive of those fluent in ASL, ensuring a supportive environment for the Deaf community.

Upcoming events for Deaf disc golfers include the 24th Annual National Deaf Disc Golf Championship, scheduled for June 25-26, 2024, and the Deaf West Open 2024 from April 13-14, 2024, at Kayak Point Disc Golf Resort in Stanwood, Washington. Another notable event is Deaf Island XXII, set for June 29, 2024, at Riverhead Field in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.
